David L. Gulley, PhD, is Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). For over 20 years, he has provided leadership at UIC for academic-industry collaborations including research, technology transfer and technology-based economic development initiatives. Gulley serves on regional industry association leadership committees and represents the University through service on several boards, committees, and with international efforts. Nationally, he serves as AUTM’s in-coming Vice President for Professional Development; on the CLP Board of Governors; and with BIO’s Technology Transfer Committee, BIO2010 Community Outreach Committee, and National Program Committee. He holds a Master’s graduate degree from Virginia Tech, and a BA and PhD from Southern Illinois University. |

Justyna Ciegotura is currently holding a position of Business Analyst of UIC's Office of Technology Management. She obtained her Master's degree in Economics from the Poznan University of Economics in Poland and Master’s of Business Administration from UIC. Justyna joined OTM in 2002 and assisted the office in technology transfer operations. In 2003 she took a lead in creation of technology assessment team and business development unit; since then she continues working with UIC holding Business Analyst position. By supervising a team of junior analysts she oversees technology triage and evaluation processes that set grounds for business development. |

Laurent Buisson has been General Director for Research and Technology Transfer at Université Pierre et Marie Curie (UPMC) since October 2008. UPMC is the leading French Research University with 31 000 students enrolled in Science and Medicine and 1900 faculty members. UPMC grants 700 PhD every year. It is based in downtown Paris and operates 3 marine stations.
Before joining UPMC, Laurent Buisson was head of the Department for innovation and regional policy with the French Ministry for Research.. This department deals with R&D in private companies (research tax credit), spin-off creation from public research (seed capital, incubators, national contest…), technology transfer and graduate or technological education in companies. This department is also in charge of the regional policy for Research. After ten years of research in computer science applied to environmental studies with INRIA, then with Cemagref in Grenoble, France, he held several positions as a senior administrator or as a scientific attaché with the Ministry for Research in Strasbourg or with the French Foreign Service in Chicago. Laurent Buisson received a PhD from Université Joseph Fourier, Grenoble and is a alumni from Ecole Polytechnique. |

Linda S. Kawano, Ph.D.
For close to 25 years, Dr. Linda Kawano has held positions in the areas of sales support and marketing, technology transfer, technology assessment, licensing, and business development in both the corporate and academic sectors. Dr. Kawano's experience includes licensing diagnostic technologies for Abbott Laboratories, directing Northwestern University's Technology Transfer Program, business development, technical and sales support, and life science product marketing for the Life Sciences Division of Amersham Corporation. In 1996 she founded the consulting firm, GroupOptima Consulting Services focused on intellectual property management and technology transfer education. While serving as Director of the Technology Transfer Program at Northwestern University, Dr. Kawano negotiated a license agreement for an invention that eventually became a blockbuster drug, LyricaTM, for Pfizer Co. Sales of LyricaTM are reported to have reached $1.2 billion in 2006. Through GroupOptima, Dr. Kawano has been retained by U.S., Japanese and European universities and companies throughout North America and overseas. In an effort to expand global understanding and knowledge about technology transfer, Dr. Kawano developed a tailored, modular course, Academic Technology Transfer Practice for non-U.S. Universities and Corporations that she has presented to Asian and European universities. She has also taught and served as a management lab coach at The University of Chicago Booth Graduate School of Business. Dr. Kawano is a long standing member and served as a Vice President of the Association of University Technology Transfer Managers (AUTM). She also served as a member of the Licensing Executives Society (LES) Membership Committee and is a frequent participant in numerous technology transfer workshops, seminars and courses. She holds a B.S. in Biological Sciences and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences and Experimental Pathology from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Kawano is a recipient of the AUTM Excellence Award and is a registered Certified Licensing Professional. |

Charles C. Valauskas is co-founder of and partner in the Chicago law firm of Valauskas & Pine LLC. Mr. Valauskas has represented businesses and institutions (including universities and research foundations) in a wide variety of technological areas in patent and other intellectual property matters, licensing, and commercialization. Mr. Valauskas is the Vice President for Industry Relations of the Association of University Technology Managers. He is regularly engaged as a speaker both in the United States and overseas on a wide variety of intellectual property topics, most recently on the topic of intellectual property protection of business method patents, the protection and commercialization of software and other forms of content, and licensing. He has taught as an adjunct professor on intellectual property matters. Charles received his B.S. from the University of Illinois (Chicago 1977), a J.D. from the DePaul University College of Law (1981), and a LL.M. from the Northwestern University School of Law (1985). |
| Jan Heidjer Staecker, J.D., L.L.M. TreMonti Consulting, LLC Heidjer Staecker is a Partner with TreMonti Consulting. He has over 10 years experience in commercialization & licensing of intellectual property, monitoring abuse of intellectual property, and intellectual property sourcing. Prior to co-founding TreMonti Consulting, Mr. Staecker worked for Deloitte & Touche's, Washington, DC Intellectual Asset Management Practice, and as an attorney focusing on corporate issues, including contract management, M&A, cost sharing agreements, and the tax treatment of royalty streams. Mr. Staecker received a B.A. in Biology and Society from Cornell University, a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami, and a Master of Laws from Georgetown University. |
